how to install XP in windows 7 using VirtualBOx virtual machin tool

In this post i will tell you how to install XP in windows 7 using VirtualBOx virtual machine tool

You will be surprised at not only how simple the installation is, but how much better hardware detection is. In fact, as you will witness in the sample installation we will do, no hardware drivers are necessary. Believe it or not, Windows XP will work right out of the box.

Fist step is install Virtualbox it simple to install. Once installed you can fire up VirtualBox and you will see a window similar to that in Figure as shown in below. The only difference being that in my example there is already a virtual machine installed. And even though the currently installed VM is Windows XP, we can still install another XP instance. You can have as many instances of a single OS as you want so long as you have the room for it.

let’s begin the process.

The first thing to do is to click the New button which will start up the Wizard. This wizard, just like the setup wizard, is very user-friendly and makes for installing a virtual machine a breeze.

OS Name/Type

The first screen is just a welcome screen – click the Next button to move on to the first real interactive screen.

The first screen (shown in below) will require you to give the VM a name and select the operating system. Name can be any one you liked, chose Operating system Microsoft windows and vesion is windows XP

After you have configured the name and the OS type click the Next button to move on.

Virtual Memory

The next screen requires you to select the amount of memory you want to dedicate to your Virtual Machine. Use caution with this setting. You have to still have enough memory left for your host operating system to run. By default VirtualBox will offer you the minimum required to run the virtual machine. This is fine if you don’t plan on doing much with the VM. If, however, you plan on running particular applications that are memory intensive, you should bump up the virtual memory a bit.

Hard Drive

Select a virtual hard disk to used as the boot hard disk of the virtual machine. you can either creat a new hard disk or select an exiting one from drop down list.

If you installing Os 1st time in VB than select Create new hard disk

Create new hard disk
first dialog box is for welcome click next
select the hard disk storage type i recommand to select dynamically expanding storage
select the location in your host hard disk for guet os and select the size of hard disk click next botton
click on Finish button to complect hard disk creat

Install OS

Now put your OS cd into the CD drive, select the virtual machine you want to use, and click the Start button. The first thing you will see is an information box instructing you how to capture and rekease your cursor. This is important to know, otherwise you will find yourself not being able to use your mouse outside of VirtualBox. To capture the cursor in VirtualBox you just click the mouse inside of the machine window. To release the cursor you hit the Ctrl key on the right side of your keyboard. That’s it. Click through that warning and you’re ready to rock

XP os installtion is pretty much a standard installation of Windows. This will generally take about the same amount of time a normal installation will take. When you are finished you will have a working install of Windows XP (as shown in Figure 3).

You will notice XP is inside of a window. Within that window is a menu with three choices. One of those menus you will use quite often is the Machine menu. Of course you can not get to it if the virtual machine has captured your cursor. If you are working within your VM, and you want to get to that menu, click the right Ctrl key and your cursor is released.

From the Machine menu you can do a number of things such as:

* Change the view mode to full screen.
* Take a snapshot of the current state of your virtual machine.
* Pause your virtual machine.
* Shutdown your virtual machine.
* Close your virtual machine.
Instead of going through the standard process of shutting down Windows XP the easiest method of shutdown is to first Pause the virtual machine and then Close the virtual machine. When you pause the VM the screen will turn gray (as below fig) and you can then close that machine.

When you click Close you will see another window asking if you want to just close the machine or if you want to save the machine state before you close it. If you haven’t saved the machine recently go ahead and select save machine state.

Now when you start that Virtual Machine back up it will start up in the same state it was when you closed it. Imagine starting up Windows XP in less than 5 seconds! That is what you will experience when starting a virtual machine from a saved state.

When all of your machines are closed you can then exit VirtualBox from the File menu of the main window.

Final thoughts

I hope your experience with VirtualBox is as good as mine. I have used a number of virtual machine software – from costly proprietary to free open source and I have to say that VirtualBox is one of the best.

What is Windows 7 Homegroup?

Homegroup allows you to connect wirelessly to other computers allowing
you to share documents, photos, music and other files as well as your printer.
As the initiator of Homegroup you can ensure the security of your files by
making them read-only. However, you also have the option of allowing other
members of your Homegroup to modify your files.

Setting up a HomeGroup
To create a Windows 7 HomeGroup you need two or more computers
running Windows 7. This exercise will involve setting up a HomeGroup for
two computers, a Desktop computer and a Laptop computer.
The Desktop computer takes the first step in setting up a Homegroup. This
involves deciding whether to share library files and printers and then
generating a Homegroup password so other user(s) can join the Homegroup
network.

Start -> Control Panel -> in the section labelled Network and Internet ->
Choose“Homegroup and Sharing Options” -> The Homegroup window opens,
click the button labelled, Create a Homegroup -> The “Create a Homegroup”
window opens, displaying the features you can share –> Pictures, Documents,
Music, Printers and Videos -> Check the boxes for those items you wish to
share -> Click the Next button -> Next, Windows 7 generates a password to
allow other computer user(s) to join the Homegroup -> Click Print password
and instructions -> Give the Password information sheet to the other
computer user(s) -> Click the Finish button.

How To Create a Windows 7 Homegroup

Windows 7 provides a new and exciting feature called Homegroup. This
improvement allows users a unique way to network other computers
running Windows 7 in a home or workplace situation.
Under Windows 7 you can forget about setting up a conventional network
system as Windows 7 Homegroup is simpler and easier to set up. This new
feature works with all computers running Windows 7.

Customizing Windows 7 Taskbar

Using the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box you can the look of
the buttons. The default option is “Always combine, hide labels”.

Let us look at the three Taskbar options.
Option 1
Always combine, hide labels

This is the default setting for the Taskbar. Windows 7 combines multiple files
from the same application, for example Word, by hiding the labels,
preserving valuable space on the Taskbar.

Option 2
Combine when taskbar is full

In the section labelled, “Taskbar buttons”, click the down arrow button ->
This opens displaying a drop-down list of options -> Select the second option
“Combine when taskbar is full” -> Click the Apply button followed by the Ok
button -> With multiple files active in several programs, Word, Paintbrush,
Notepad, Paint and WordPad, the Taskbar would be too crowded. So,
Windows 7 combines the files from the same application.

Option 3
Never Combine

Re-open the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box -> In the section
labelled, “Taskbar buttons”, click the down arrow button -> Select the third
option, “Never combine” -> The Taskbar displays several files from the same
applications.

How to Create A Custom Windows 7 Library

Folders allow users to add many files to one location for organizational
purposes. However, many folders, by default contain files that support
applications or software. Such folders like system folders are for Operating
system support. Other folders, like pictures and music are created so that the
user can have a special storage location. Enter libraries, Windows 7
organizational feature for content.
The Libraries are tailored to specific content types. By default, there are four
kinds of libraries (in Windows 7 Ultimate) documents, music, pictures, and
video. Each Library presents its content in a style that’s most appropriate for
that library type. But users are able to create their own libraries. It is also
very easy to use.

Start -> Computer -> Libraries -> Select New Library from the Menu Bar ->
A new library icon is presented and you can type in the name -> If you double
click on the icon you will enter the library -> Now the fun part begins. It is
easy to add items to the library.

Features of Libraries
Here are common features that you will find in the libraries. They are very similar to folders.
You can expand or contract the content of the libraries.
You can expand or collapse the Libraries option to see the individual folders
Right clicking on the folder in the library section will allow you to:
share
rename
remove the location from the library
or send to desktop, folder, or drive
create a new folder

How To Repair Damaged or Corrupted Thumbs.db Files

Thumbs.db files can sometimes become damaged or corrupted which can
cause some very specific problems in Windows.
Sometimes one or more damaged or corrupted thumbs.db files can cause
problems when navigating around folders with multimedia content or they
could be the cause of error messages like "Explorer caused an invalid page
fault in module Kernel32.dll" and similar messages.
Repairing thumbs.db files is a pretty simple task considering Windows will
regenerate the file when the particular folder it's contained in is viewed in
the "Thumbnails" view.

Open the folder that you suspect the damaged or corrupted thumbs.db file
to be contained in -> 2. Locate the thumbs.db file. If you can not see the file,
your computer may be configured to not show hidden files. If that is the
case, change the folder options to allow the display of hidden files -> Once
the thumbs.db file is located, right click on it and choose Delete -> To
recreate the file, click on View and then Thumbnails from the menu in the
folder that you deleted the thumbs.db file from. This will initiate the
Thumbnails view and will automatically create a new copy of the thumbs.db
file.

Note: If you can not delete the file, you may need to change the folder view
to something other than the Thumbnail view. To do this, click on View and
then choose either Tiles, Icons, List, or Details. Depending on your version of
the Windows operating system, some of these options may vary slightly.

How To Locate and Recover Data From Bad Sectors Within Recovery Console in Windows XP

A sector of a hard drive is the smallest divisible unit of the physical drive, at
least as far as storing data is concerned.
As a hard drive fails, one sector after another becomes unusable.
Fortunately, all the data in a sector may not be permanently lost. If a failing
hard drive has prevented you from starting your computer, the damaged
data that's causing the problem might be recoverable from within Recovery
Console.

Enter Windows XP Recovery Console -> The Recovery Console is an advanced
diagnostic mode of Windows XP with special tools that will allow you to find
and recover bad sectors -> When you reach the command prompt type
chkdsk /r -> press Enter ->
The chkdsk command will scan your hard drive for any damaged sectors.
If any data is readable from any bad sector found, chkdsk will recover it.
Take out the Windows XP CD, type exit and then press Enter to restart your
PC
Assuming bad hard drive sectors were the cause of your problem and chkdsk
was able to recover data from them, Windows XP should now start normally.

how To Automatically Log on To Windows 7

If security isn't a big issue for you, configuring Windows 7 to logon to your
user account automatically can save you some time when your computer is
starting up.

Start -> type netplwiz in the search box -> Press the ENTER
This command will load the Advanced User Accounts control panel applet.
In the Users tab, uncheck the box next to Users must enter a user name and
password to use this computer -> Click on the Apply button at the bottom of
the User Accounts window -> When the Automatically Log On dialog box
appears, enter the user name you wish to automatically login to Windows 7
with. Then enter your account password in the two fields where it's asked ->
Click the OK button -> Click OK on the User Accounts window to complete
the process.
From now on, when your PC starts up, Windows 7 will log on automatically.
